FRIDAY FIRSTS with Tammy Dennings Maggy

The First Five Sentences of...FOR THE LOVE OF QUINN

This conversation between Quinn and her receptionist, Jillian sets up the scene to show how busy Quinn is with her career and how she really needs to get away for the vacation with her sister.

“Dr. Hollis?”

“Yes,  Jillian.” Quinn closed her eyes and waited for the inevitable.

“It’s Mrs. Green again. Sorry.”

FUN FIRST FACTS ABOUT TAMMY

1. What’s the first thing you notice on an attractive member of the opposite sex?
I always notice the eyes first on a man or a woman.  The old saying that the eyes are windows into the soul is so very true for me.  If the man is smiling and it’s not in his eyes, I am immediately on guard, like he’s hiding something. You can also tell if they are interested in you by their eyes.  I’m not talking about that look you up and down sort of leer, but how he holds your gaze and keeps eye contact when he’s talking to you or when you are speaking.

2. What was the first meal you made for your significant other?
One of my specialties is lasagna and as luck would have it, a favorite of my boyfriend as well.  I use my mother’s recipe for the sauce and instead of using ricotta, I use cottage cheese.  That was the surprise for him since he didn’t usually eat cottage cheese, but he was very happy with how the whole thing turned out.  What he was even more excited about was the fact that I made enough to freeze too.  He was able to have lasagna for a few more times and be reminded of me when he ate it.

I think that’s what clinched it for him.  He never had anyone who would cook for him like this and make sure that he was taken care of when they weren’t around.  He loves everything I make and it’s a big ego boost when he takes a bite, closes his eyes and smiles.

3. What’s the first thing you do when you start reading a new book? (ie: read the back cover blurb again or the inside front cover, the acknowledgments, the last page, etc)
After I get through the first chapter or so, I turn to the end and scan it quickly.  I know, I know!  I shouldn’t do that because it might ruin the story for me, but I don’t think that’s the case.  I end up knowing how it ends, but the fun for me is the journey leading up to that.  There still are a lot of twists and turns to go through and the “why” the book ended the way it does is the best part.  If it’s a part of a series, then skipping ahead to the end sort of puts me in the mindset that another book is coming to hopefully answer any questions and tie up loose ends.

More about Tammy:  After nearly 19 years as a veterinarian, I decided to finally follow my dream of being a published writer. Creating the characters and story lines has opened up a whole new world for me that I hope to delve into for many years to come!

I am a Midwestern girl who lives in California.  I feel like a fish out of water most of the time out here, but I have met a lot of people who help to make me feel a little less homesick for Michigan.  I hope to explore more of the Pacific Northwest over the next few years and enjoy all that it has to offer.  Who knows, maybe I will write another series set in this area!

  3. Your mentioning the first meal you made for someone brought back a memory of the 1st meal I made for my ex-husband. It was so bad that he actually spit it out. We ate the bread & drank the wine instead.I have never attempted clams & linguine again.

  5. May, I made "meatloaf muffins" not too long ago and usually they turn out great, but I put them on the lower rack in the oven and didn't watch them close enough. They got a little crisp shall we say but my guy still made the best of it. He cut off the "charcoal" and ate the rest. Gotta love him. I was ready to toss all of them out!

Leanore, I'm glad you enjoyed the book. Love you too!

Rose: Thank you! The first five sentences of the book are pretty much the story of my life at work. My receptionists are fantastic about screening calls but man there sure are those clients that will keep calling and calling until they get to speak with you IMMEDIATELY. Then you find out they only want to make an appointment, which they could have done right off with the receptionist! LOL Crazy animal owners...bless their hearts! ;)
